Launch of Discussion Material
The project will be publicly launched on Wednesday February 22, 2017, at 6pm, in the Sydney Trades Hall Auditorium.
The Common Action project has developed public discussion resources on an alternative economic direction for Australia. We’ve called this project “Let’s Make an Economy for Everyone”. It is an ambitious project to shift the ‘conventional wisdom’ away from the disastrous neo-liberal policies now dominating our nation.
The first short video clip – Let’s Make Trade Fair- has been created and can be viewed on the front page or under Training Resources
The member organisations of Common Action currently comprise: Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, Evatt Foundation, Aboriginal Rights Coalition, Migrante Australia, FILEF, MUA Sydney Branch, NSW Nurses & Midwives Association, Australian Fair Trade & Investment Network, SEARCH Foundation, F-Collective, ALP Socialist Left NSW, Greens NSW, CFMEU Construction & General Div NSW, CFMEU Mining & Energy Div, Fire Brigade Employees Union, National Tertiary Education Union, Community & Public Sector Union. This network can reach over 300,000 people.
Common Action has now produced 11 2-page Discussion Starters and 3-minute video scripts and has started the production of the 11 video clips. Once these materials are available, participating organisations and individuals can distribute these materials to their members and networks in ways appropriate to them. Any person who contributes to this crowdfunding appeal will also receive all the material on all platforms used. We are challenging people to define what kind of economy they want for Australia.
Based on the views put forward by people in this mass consultation process, we envisage that a new set of documents will be produced later in 2017, which could be the focus of regional conferences and a national conference.
The topics of the 11 Discussion Starters and Video clips are:
- How do we get an economy that protects and restores the natural environment?
- How do we get a fairer distribution of income and wealth?
- Women and Economic Inequality
- Let’s Make Trade Fair
- How do we make Education work as a Public Good?
- A Peoples Alternative to Aboriginal Policy
- Ideas for a Fairer Tax System
- Ensuring a Diverse Economy - Rethinking Industry Policy
- What can we do to have Secure Jobs and Fair, Safe Workplaces?
- Let’s make Income Support and Social Welfare reduce Inequality
- A Fair Go for Migrants and Temporary Migrant Workers
